“This doesn’t make sense": Mum fined for parking in own driveway

A Gold Coast mum couldn't believe her eyes when she found an almost $200 fine in her mail for parking in her own driveway.

“I got a lovely fine from Gold Coast City Council for parking in my own driveway,” Megan Pass told 7News.

“This doesn’t make sense.

“Everybody I’ve shared this with is going, ‘What the hell?’”

The council claims that part of her driveway is located on council land so she was breaking the law by parking on it.

The mother-of-three said that she has lived in the house for seven years and parked her car there every day and has never been fined before.

The council website states that there is an important difference between someone's driveway, which "ends at the property boundary", and a vehicular crossing, which is the section of the driveway between the boundary and the road.

The local law prevents people from parking over council land for more than two minutes, so Ms. Pass got fined $193.

People took to social media to share their thoughts on Ms Pass' situation.

“What a joke - revenue raising at its best,” one user tweeted.

While another said: “Yip I got one of those fines lol. Just paid it. Don’t have time spare to go court to be told… you broke the law… pay the fine."

“Will the mayor mow the footpath once a week and water it? That bloke’s a goose,” a third added.

Images: 7News

Yeah, no Sonia," she said.

"I'm not happy that someone who made discriminatory comments on the Today show about Muslim people in 2016 won," she added.

Chatfield echoed the voices of the viewers at home who also took issue with Kruger's "discriminatory" comments and believed that she did not deserve to win the Most Popular Personality award at the Logies.

Ver esta publicación en Instagram

Una publicación compartida por IT’S A LOT PODCAST (@itsalotpod)

In 2016, Kruger called for Australia to stop Muslim immigration because she wanted to "feel safe".

"Personally, I would like to see it stop now for Australia because I want to feel safe as all of our citizens do when we go out to celebrate Australia Day," she said during a heated panel discussion at the time.

At the time, she also argued that there was a correlation between the number of Muslims in a country and the number of terrorist attacks.

Chatfield also expressed her disappointment in Kruger for not using her platform to help those in need.

"How about you use the privilege you have as a white woman to not discriminate against people of colour or people who have a different minority than you?" she said.

Images: Instagram

The future of travel is looking bright … and feeling luxurious

A new report from Luxury Gold, experts in the realm of boutique luxury travel experiences, has shed some insight into what hopeful holidaymakers can expect to find on their next once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Whether your interests lie in unique experiences you can brag about at every dinner party for the rest of your life, taking home a special piece of your dream getaway as your own personal treasure, or exploring locations most could only ever dream of setting foot in, Luxury Gold have you covered.

And while some may be a little unsure at the prospect of luxury travel during a cost of living crunch, Luxury Gold have actually reported a 150% increase in bookings since 2022, and expect almost one in six Australians over 18 to spend $10,000 on their next big break.

With that in mind, it has never been more important to know exactly what you want to get out of your holiday - and where to find it. Luckily for us all, Luxury Gold are experts in the field of Luxury Small Group Journeys, and are on a mission to redefine the idea of the New Golden Age of Travel.

As managing director Toni Ambler explained, “a holiday is more than ‘just a holiday’ for modern luxury consumers, especially post-pandemic. Instead, it’s an opportunity to grow, learn and soak in experiences that will change us for the better. It’s travel that’s more purposeful and curated, as opposed to ‘in-and-out’ or flash-in-the-pan holidays.

“Our customer base has always expected to have one-of-a-kind experiences on their trip. ‘The New Golden Age of Travel’ report underscores this notion, but also shows that we’re seeing a return to this nostalgic essence of what travel used to be in the golden age, where consumers crave curated experiences, souvenirs that matter, and activities that expand our minds.”

And when it comes to those curated experiences, Luxury Gold have noted that consumers aren’t just looking to spend their money on flights and a destination before calling it a day, in a trend they’ve named ‘Touring on Top’.

Instead, they want an experience out of it all - one unique to where they’re visiting, and one that ticks every box they could ever want to fill, with a trip and itinerary designed specifically for them and their interests - even the most niche of the bunch.

“Post-pandemic, we've seen a lot of change in the way Australians travel and why they are travelling. The rise of the travel advisor is key to this, as clients want end-to-end experiences and touring is the perfect example,” Global Brand and Marketing Director for Luxury Travel Associates Anna Burgdorf said.

“Instead of booking flights, accommodation and activities on their own, more and more Australians want this process to be seamlessly managed and that means finding a trusted advisor that can undertake this process of collaboration with them … booking a tour simply takes the guesswork and stress out of the booking process.

“Whether visiting Travel Associates or speaking with a travel agent, these experts work closely with the customer to understand their unique needs and custom build a package tour that works for them.”

Essentially, people want human service, and they want someone who’s going to understand - and respect - every last bit of their holiday desires through the entire planning process.

American Express have reported that 59% of people would like to work with a travel agent to get the personalised trip of their dreams, while GWI have found that 77% of luxury travellers would rather spend on an experience - or products for one - that comes hand in hand with a sense of community.

A rise has occurred in the number of community-oriented trips taking place in the travel sector - with those seeking both the community experience of those they’re taking with them, and those they’re meeting along the way - as people realise what it is that’s important in life, turning their attention to experience, and not only things.

However, it can be hard to come home from any trip - especially when it’s not just the trip of a lifetime, but also one entirely for you.

That’s why it can make all the difference to bring a little piece of it with you, especially as travellers are searching for those crucial tangible experiences - or, as Luxury Gold have found, ‘Tangible Nostalgia’.

As Toni Ambler explained, holidaymakers used to be able to show off their passports and the various stamps they’d collected within, boasting of their adventures with some proof over where they’d explored in their journey across the world.

But now, trends suggest that it’s less is actually more, with Toni noting that “it’s more about the quality and unique experiences we’ve had over volume.”

Additionally, people don’t just want something to pop on their shelf and forget about, instead reaching for something that evokes the same feeling as the passport boasts, or throws them right back into a moment from their trip, bringing memories to the forefront every time they’re around their treasured keepsake.

For example, The Maker Hotel have released perfumes designed to remind visitors of their time living it up away from home - scents that will keep the good times coming, and won’t see those souvenir funds going to waste.

TravelPulse have also revealed that music plays a major part in the travel experience, too. So the next time you’re overseas - or even exploring what’s on offer at home - make sure to compile your very own playlist, so the sounds of your experience will never be far from your ears.

And as Planet 9 Private Air believe, remaining true to your destination has never mattered more to travellers, as “from the locavore culinary trend to a focus on locally made crafts and artwork, the luxury travel industry is discovering its preference for high-end goods and services sourced from the destinations they represent.”

To read the full report and learn more about Luxury Gold’s six travel trends, visit luxurygold.com/en-au/travel-trends-report.

Images: Luxury Gold [supplied]

“It tastes like rich”: Hotel sells $32 coffee with gold sprinkles

At the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, you can treat yourself to a cappuccino for a whopping $32AUD, although you’re not really paying for the coffee alone.

The cappuccino, which is found at the hotel’s Le Cafe by the Fountain comes with 23-karat gold sprinkled on top and it has been named the Emirates Palace Golden Cappuccino.

The pricey cap is not the only item on the menu that is embellished with gold, with the hotel advertising a camel milk vanilla or chocolate ice cream with a 23-karat gold leaf for $29.

In the mood for a cold drink? The Emirates Palace has got you covered with their Hawaiian Candy Colada, a mocktail topped with 23-karat gold flakes for $26.

Tourists have shared videos on social media, with one showing a barista shaking a can of gold flakes over a row of cappuccinos, much like one would with the average cocoa powder topping.

Another video posted by a worker shows her adding gold flakes with a spoon.

One TikToker who got to try the luxurious coffee wrote, “The gold cappuccino was 8/10 but the vibes were 100/10.”

One user wrote, “It tastes like rich.”

Another agreed, writing “It tastes expensive.”

A Canadian coffee content creator, Brodie Vissers, better known as The Nomad Barista online reviewed the hotel’s cappuccino on YouTube.

“Our drinks have arrived, I’m a little bit nervous. It used to be 24-karat, now they’ve reduced it to 23-karat but it is still gold sprinkled on this coffee,” he said.

“I don’t even know what to expect from this drink,” he said before trying the luxurious drink.

“It’s actually not bad. Of course the foam on the latte is not like a perfect flat white or anything. It’s actually not as sweet as I expected. It’s got a nice balance to it. It’s an interesting drink.

“We cannot forget about the dates. Having dates with coffee is a very traditional thing here in the Middle East.

“Let’s see how that pairs with the latte. Wow, that is so good. I recommend it if you’re around. It’s a kind of unique opportunity here in (Emirates) Palace. What better place to drink coffee with gold on top.”

“Once-in-a-lifetime find”: Man discovers gold nugget worth six figures

A man from Victoria has struck gold armed with his budget metal detector.

The man, who wishes to not be named, discovered a 4.6kg rock in Victoria’s “Golden Triangle” which stretches between Ballarat, Bendigo and up to St Arnaud.

Unsure of whether it was worth anything, he brought the rock to Lucky Strike Gold in Geelong for evaluation where Gold trader Darren Kamp discovered it contained a staggering 2.6kg of gold worth $240k.

“He said, ‘Oh, do you think there’s $10,000 worth in it?’, and as soon as it hit my hand I looked at him and said: ‘Try a $100,000’,” Kamp told 9News.

"And he said, 'Oh wow, the wife's going to be happy with that," said Kamp.

Funnily enough, the man had only brought in half of the rock and left the other half “at home”.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find,” said Kamp.

Small nuggets of gold are worth up to $1000, but the value of gold has soared due to inflation.

“You’ll hear the term, ‘if it’s got your name on it, you’ll find it’,” Kamp said.

“You just need some luck and persistence. It’s like a Tattslotto ticket, you’re never going to win it unless you’ve got a ticket,” he added.

The gold nuggets from this region were famous for their quantity, size and purity, and were mostly found in streams or river beds.

Image: Nine News

“That’s why we call him Superman”: Sea World crash survivor speaks

The little boy who nearly lost his life in the tragic Sea World helicopter crash has revealed an update on his journey to recovery two months after the incident occurred.

Nicky Tadros shared the news after months in hospital, with doctors initially unsure if the 10-year-old would make it out alive.

“My kidneys have woken up and I’m no more on a fluid restriction,” he said on Nine’s A Current Affair.

“And my liver levels have gotten better and all my blood test results have come back really good.”

Nicky was on one of the helicopters that collided mid-air at Sea World on the Gold Coast.

His mother, Vanessa Tadros, was killed alongside British tourists Ron and Diane Hughes and Sea World Helicopters chief pilot Ash Jenkinson. The other helicopter managed to land on a sandbank.

Nicky’s father, Simon Tadros, said he was incredibly proud of his “strong willed” son’s recovery effort.

“The bravery he’s showing and he’s just pushing through every kind of hardship,” Mr Tadros said.

“That’s why we call him Superman, because everything you put in front of him, he just pushes it out on the way.”

Despite the effort to save Nicky’s life, doctors were unable to save his right leg, with the 10-year-old having to undergo a five-and-a-half-hour operation to amputate.

“I was nervous at the beginning because I thought they get a chainsaw and chop it off from Bunnings Warehouse,” he said.

Although the boy had endured countless surgeries with a long road to recovery ahead, he was grateful for the support he received.

“I thank [Australia] for everything because I know that they’re always praying for me and caring for me and that’s the same with dad,” he said.

“[Dad]’s always caring for me, since day one he’s never left my side no matter what.

“When I’m sad when I’m happy when I’m angry, he’s there for me.”

Mr Tadros has celebrated each milestone as his son works toward leaving hospital and returning to his normal life.

Nicky also shared what he was most looking forward to once he leaves hospital.

“A miracle that I’m here”: Sea World helicopter crash survivor speaks out

Disaster survivor Winnie De Silva has spoken to Sunrise’s Monique Wright about the devastating Sea World helicopter ride that she and her son, Leon, were passengers of.

Winnie met Monique with a smile from her wheelchair, a necessity in the wake of her injuries - two broken legs, a crushed collarbone, blood clots, a severely wounded liver, and burns.

Winnie and Leon were two of three survivors from their helicopter, with the other four people onboard losing their lives in the accident.

“It was just a miracle that I’m here,” Winnie told Monique.

The trip was a holiday for the mother and her nine-year-old son, and the flight a special treat for them both.

“Up in the air I took two selfie photos for me and Leon,” Winnie said of the minutes before tragedy struck, “the water scenery was very beautiful, and Leon said to me ‘Mum, take photos’.”

“We heard a bang,” she continued, going on to share her experience of the fatal crash, detailing the moment of collision. “When I saw the pilot’s side of the window, it’s broken. I could only see outside.

“I would see clouds. I would see water underneath … and then I thought, ‘this is not going to be a helicopter ride anymore’.

“The shaking was horrible. It was shaking both sides, and shaking continuously. It was just the end of life. And I had hope in the pilot, to me he’s my hero. I salute Ash, may he rest in peace.”

Ash, the helicopter’s pilot, managed to get the aircraft above a sandbar, a move Winnie credits with saving herself and her son, Leon. Ash, unfortunately, lost his life that day.

“I saw him struggle with trying to stabilise that helicopter,” Winnie recalled, “I didn’t see anyone else. I was looking at him.”

“I held Leon’s hand, and I asked him to close his eyes,” she added, “and I closed my eyes as well, and I said to God ‘let your will be done’. When I closed my eyes, it was peace that came to myself. I can’t remember anything else.”

Leon remains in hospital, where he is slowly improving. However, having been left with damage to his brain from the crash, he requires 24 hour care. Leon has been receiving treatment at Queensland Children’s Hospital, while Winnie has been at The Gold Coast University Hospital, and the two have only been able to see each other once in six weeks.

Despite the tragedy, and the long and difficult road to recovery ahead of them, Winnie was open about her hope for the future, and expressed her gratitude for the miracle of their survival, telling Monique, “I am here, alive, and happy.

“I am so thankful. I am doing okay right now, despite walking. But psychologically, mentally, I feel like there’s hope.”

Images: Seven

Investigation launched after helicopter crash sees four dead

Investigators have begun searching for answers about the fatal helicopter crash that left four people dead on the Gold Coast.

After a mid-air collision on Monday afternoon, the distressing scene played out in front of thousands of guests visiting Sea World, and the busy Gold Coast Broadwater for the New Year’s Day public holiday.

Initial reports suggest one helicopter was taking off as the other was landing when they collided.

“One was trying to leave and they both smacked into each other,” a witness told 7NEWS.

“Then they broth dropped and one of the helicopters actually lit on fire.”

Another witness described the explosion that followed the collision.

“We just looked up and they instantly hit each other,” she said.

“Blades went flying, flames everywhere.”

One helicopter fell upside down into a sandbank at the water’s edge scattering debris over a wide area around 2 pm on Monday near the popular theme park.

On board, four people were killed and three passengers were critically injured.

The second aircraft landed safely, but the windscreen was damaged. Queensland Ambulance supervisor Jayney Shearman said another six patients were treated primarily for glass shrapnel wounds.

He said the “airframe has crashed and it was upside down”, and its front was severely damaged.

The helicopter had no nose and no windscreen, after both were blasted off in the moment of impact and those below the crash could only run from the blades of the first helicopter spearing into the sand.

Tourists became rescuers, as people on jet skis and in boats rushed to help the victims at the small sandbank before paramedics and police arrived on the scene.

They were confronted with a “significant incident”, Queensland Police Acting Inspector Gary Worrell said.

Members of the public rendered immediate assistance, working alongside police to remove people - including at least one child - from the wreckage as it burst into flames.

They commenced first aid and tried to get those people to safety from the airframe that was upside down, Worrell said.

Jayney Shearman from QAS said they attended to 13 people from both helicopters.

“There were three critical patients that were treated and there were six with minor injuries that were all transported through to hospital,” she said.

“The minor injuries were mainly glass shrapnel that had come from the impact.”

Shearman said there were a number of critical injuries, “what we call multi-system trauma which means that there was a lot of impact to the body”.

In the initial stages, she said, it was very important to have some basic life support which was being conducted by first-aiders.

Two people, a woman and a child were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital while another child was airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Six other people are at Robina Hospital being assessed in the emergency department and it is understood some may be eventually transferred to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Sea World’s chief pilot Ashley Jenkinson has been confirmed as one of the victims. He leaves behind a wife and a young son.

Images: 7News
